Intentionally Creating Community
Community isn’t just a word at Meridian; it’s built through deliberate choices every day. We create opportunities for students to collaborate, shape the environment they want to be part of, and learn to take on meaningful leadership roles.
Life Outside of the Classroom
Community Groups
Community Groups bring students from different ages and social groups together with a faculty member to build connections through shared projects, activities, and schoolwide traditions.
Committees
Student-led committees bring together students across all grades to identify needs and take action to strengthen the Meridian and broader communities. Division 4 students all are responsible for leading committees, which have included topics like environmental action, social justice, community service, entertainment, student government, and yearbook.
All-School Meetings
All-School meetings bring students and staff together every other week to share ideas, hear from guest speakers, discuss school life, play competitive games, and collaboratively shape the future of Meridian.
Grade Meeting
Grade Meetings provide dedicated time for students to develop academic, social-emotional, wellness, leadership, and life skills tailored to their needs at each stage of their Meridian journey.
Mentoring and Peer Support (MAPS)
MAPS pairs new students with older peers who provide mentorship, guidance, and support while building cross-grade friendships, leadership skills, and a stronger sense of community throughout Meridian.
Physical Education
Meridian’s Physical Education program helps students build the skills, knowledge, and habits they need for lifelong health and wellness through a diverse mix of movement, sports, outdoor activities, strength training, and wellness education. Students develop physical confidence, teamwork, and goal-setting skills while exploring activities such as dance, gymnastics, soccer, hiking, skating, and weightlifting in a supportive, community-centered environment.
With an emphasis on outdoor learning, personal growth, and healthy habits—including nutrition, sleep, and recovery—students are empowered to take ownership of their physical well-being both in and beyond school.
Extracurriculars
Middle and High School Bands
Meridian Band is a welcoming, student-centered ensemble where musicians of all experience levels come together to learn, rehearse, and perform music across a wide range of genres. Students can build their skills through music electives and collaborate on arrangements of popular songs and original student compositions, culminating in performances at Exhibitions, Music Night, and other school events.
Theatre
Meridian puts on two mainstage plays per year: one in the fall (faculty-directed), and one in the spring (student-directed). The plays are open to all grades and experience levels. Meridian also has a technical theatre program, where students have the opportunity to contribute to the set, lights, props, and costume design for the shows. Students also act as stage managers, assistant directors, technicians, set crew, and front of house.
Model United Nations
Learn about international politics, history, public speaking, and social justice issues as you represent a country at a simulation of the United Nations while collaborating with and debating students from around the country and the world. Students prepare for and participate with peers from across the country and around the world at conferences hosted by organizations including Brown University and MIT.
Soccer Team
Meridian Soccer gives students the opportunity to build teamwork, confidence, and athletic skills while training and competing together. Our middle and high school all-genders teams compete against independent and public schools throughout the Boston area.
Golf
Students learn the basics of driving, chipping, and putting, and hone their skills in a weekly after-school activity. After practicing at the range and practice green, the group gets the opportunity to play on a real course.
“The band at Meridian is one-of-a-kind. Without that band, I wouldn’t be a musician today. Instead, thanks to Laura, I’ve been in multiple music ensembles every year of college, from a rock band to a jazz combo, and I plan to keep playing music after I graduate.”
Amos Batalden, Class of 2023
“Directing a play as a senior was one of the most rewarding experiences. It definitely came with its challenges, and while those times were hard, I felt myself grow so much as a director, an actor, and a theater enthusiast. It was such a lucky end to my senior year and theatre experience at Meridian.”
Anna Cisler, Class of 2023
