Due Date Assignment
Tuesday 2/7 Twinkle Twinkle....
Thursday 1/24 Homework on Dark Matter and Quasars:
Thursday 1/12 1) Galaxies and Hubble's Law Homework:
2) Bring in a shoebox

Friday 12/16 1) Homework problems due.
2) Be ready for Galaxy Zoo explorations.
Tuesday, 12/13 Do a new final-ish version of your paper. Really bore in on data analysis and expand your discussion considerably. Do a comparison with known rock qualities (Sam and Density) and type of rock and Chi-squared (Nini) and push yourself to use these characteristics in a discussion of what you are seeing and what types of rocks you are looking at. Are there differences for your variable for rocks that are sedimentary, metamorphic, or igneous in origin (again, this is a nice application of chi-squared tests of significance)?
To review chi-squared tests: read http://www.celiagreen.com/charlesmccreery/statistics/chisquare.pdf.
Key points: we are calculating what the expected distribution would be if there were no distinction (e.g., if I was dropping pennies on surface with a 3x3 square inside a 5x5 box, I would expect 9/25ths of them to land on the square. If more did, I would wonder whether that was due to randomness or not and the test would tell me the likilihood that the observed results departed from the expected amount purely at random.). The chi-squred distribution tells us, based on the differences between observed and expected numbers, how likely the differences are.
Monday 12/12 1) Completed project writings and bibliographies.
2) Familiarize yoursefl with Galaxy Zoo. This will be our next project, as we get into Galaxies. http://www.galaxyzoo.org/how_to_take_part.
