The physical education program focuses on developing physical skills that will promote a healthy life throughout the students’ lifetimes. Activities such as hiking, swimming, skating and other life-long activities are given more prominence that at most schools.
There are four strands to the physical education program: team-building, exposure to different sports, fitness, and leadership development. We take advantage of good weather throughout the year to get outside and do team-building exercises as well as seasonal games. We also use indoor space when the weather is inclement.
Team-building: To promote team-building, we use the Project Adventure model of cooperative activities and initiatives. Sometimes, we use the whole class to focus on improving students’ abilities to listen and work together. At other times, we use the activities to warm up before we begin more aerobic activity.
Sports Opportunities: Over the course of the year, the students are exposed to soccer, two-hand touch football, ultimate Frisbee, kickball, basketball, lacrosse and floor hockey. We also introduce non-competitive sports activities like sledding, ice-skating, swimming, and crab soccer.
Fitness: Interwoven into classes throughout the year, students learn about and participate in calisthenics and cardiovascular workouts.
Leadership Development: We believe that each student brings different strengths to any challenge. We promote an atmosphere that allows students to use their strengths in cooperative initiatives, and also address their weaknesses, by creating an environment of trust among the students.
